"There’s a giant, matted nest dangling inside a glass alcove at the corner of Spadina Avenue and Wellington Street West. But don’t call an exterminator; it’s only art.

Svava Thordis Juliusson’s Hrisla (hrisla is Icelandic for twig) hovers over the street like a limbless wicker man – a body-sized mass of knotted, browning branches and dessicated shoots, all held together with white plastic pull ties (the kind sometimes used as temporary handcuffs).

Creepy and crumbling, this fragile Body Snatchers pod is best viewed at night, as are most dead things, and has undoubtedly caused a few drunken Club District kids to stop cold in their mirthful paths.

My only suggestion is that Stantec, the company whose office sponsors the display window, invest in some lettering identifying the artist and her deliciously gothic topiary." R.M. Vaughn, Globe and Mail. Saturday, August 7, 2010

Art Spin promises a range of art experiences, and July’s tour includes everything from an installation by Svava Juliusson to a musical performance at Somewhere There Studios in association with Music in Galleries, and will be led by trumpeting cyclist Michael L. Johnson. Other stops this month include: an installation by Dennis Lin at 47 Milky Way, a live performance by Cara Spooner and Alicia Grant, a group exhibition at Lausberg Contemporary and a photography exhibition by Hanna Hur and Laurie Kang at The Department
with a meet and greet after party to follow.

1. Yellow post and Buttercup marking the way into Bíldudal, but not on the same road as there are many roads that you can take.

2. Orange pipe and Poppy mark the start of first mountain walk in Bíldudal. I then walk up behind the avalanche berm.

3. The way up was decorated with Dandylions. In Icelandic they are called fíflar which translated also means fools.

Díónýsía 2010

For ten days this June, I will be participating in the Díónýsía 2010 Artist Residency. This year´s residency is being hosted by Bíldudalur, a small village in Iceland´s Western Fjords.

About the project:

Dionysia is an informal artist-run residency that is held every year in Iceland with hosts being a small village/villages. Every village participates maximum 2 years in a row so the residency never becomes established and is always new to the hosts.
